Question bank is the term generally used for a store of questions in any quiz engine which stores questions independently of their deployment in any particular quiz. In the Qedoc Quiz Maker, the question bank is where new questions are created, existing questions edited and previewed, and where most quiz making activity occurs.

Questions as resources

The Qedoc Quiz Maker separates out question creation from test creation. It treats questions as resources which can be collected, stored and rolled out one or more times to be combined into different tests. A module can have a question bank with 1000's of questions, but only a hundred or so might actually be live at any one time, depending on the current assessment (or test) definitions. Alternatively, a question bank might have only about 10 questions, but reusing them might result in quizzes with perhaps 50 or 100 questions in total. When you create a question with the Qedoc Quiz Maker, you should therefore think of it as a long-term resource. The question bank is a quite separate entity in the Qedoc Quiz Maker from the "level builder". The level builder is where groups or categories of pre-defined questions are collected into specific tests.

Previewing from the question bank

One of the strengths of the Qedoc Quiz Maker is its ability to offer immediate, live views of any question and to allow editing of questions while in preview mode.

The question bank table

The question bank default view is a table of all the questions.

Direct editing of values

Editing is normally not direct. Instead you click an item in the table and editor panels appear below the question bank where you can change a question's properties.

However a few fields can be directly edited, such as the status of a question (i.e. active, pending, etc).

Sorting by columns

To sort the table by any column, simply click the column header once.

Configuring columns

There are more columns available than just those initially displayed. You can configure your own choice of columns by using the column selector button on the question bank toolbar. Your choice will be stored and used in future sessions. You can also modify the column widths in the normal way by dragging the column header edges.

Reordering the questions

If you are using the default random selectors for creating tests, the actual order of the questions in the question bank does not matter. However if you switch to sequential ordering of tests, in which it is important to you that the questions are presented in a specific order, you may need to place the question bank entries in a specific order.

On the whole it is not advised to reorder the questions in the question bank. Even if you use sequential tests, you can achieve precise order better by simply entering the questions numbers in the order required when defining the test.

To reorder the table:

  • Double-click on the item numbers in the first # column. You will find that the numbers then become editable.
  • Edit the item numbers with new numbers reflecting the new desired order. You will then have a table in which the item numbers are jumbled up.
  • The final step, to un-jumble the numbers, is to click once on the column header of the # column. This will initiate a mass reordering of the items in the order you chose.
