From a technical perspective, a learning module is the basic redistributable unit of software created by the Qedoc Quiz Maker and played by the Qedoc Quiz Player. Learning modules are typically distributed as ZIP files. The ZIP files contain an XML metadata file and a QDC file with a large chunk of compressed data in it. Ordinary folks don't need to worry about what's inside it. In fact, as the Qedoc software automatically uploads and downloads modules to and from the web between educators and students, ordinary folks don't even need to ever actually do anything directly to a learning module file.
From an educational perspective, a learning module typically contains:
- a number of interactive activities, each of which can be a number of different kinds of activity, as follows:
- a self-contained and possibly randomized quiz.
- a presentation, which is usually non-interactive, and typically presents information on which the learner is then tested.
To attain these educational ends, a learning module will contain various different kinds of resource entered into it by its author, such as:
- a question bank (a collection of questions or other small-grained objects such as pages)
- an activity bank (a collection of activities, each of which consists of a series of items from the question bank)
- (optionally) a media bank (a collection of media items, which can be shared by the questions)
- (optionally) a data table collection, consisting of tables of data or media which can be entered into questions randomly.
