Letters and Sounds Phase 2
This page describes a Qedoc learning module or quiz entitled "Letters and Sounds Phase 2". You can download the module from this page to put on your computer. You can also launch the module straight off the web using the launch quiz link on the right-hand side of this page. Another way to access this quiz is to install the Qedoc Quiz Player and bring up its directory of downloadable quizzes. Whichever way you choose to use it, it's free.
This series of activities relates to the Phase 2 Letters and Sounds letters and letter groups:
SATP/INMD/GOCK/CK,EUR/HBFL,FF,LL,SS in the UK National Literacy Strategy.
Prior learning: pupils should be able to identify and sound out the letters (letter groups) Lower and upper case letters.
There are two optional activities at the start to help learners to match capital and lower case letters.
The first activity (point and click) asks the learner to identify the initial letter of a given image. The rest of the letters of the word are given, and the learner is presented with a limited choice of letters from an onscreen ‘keyboard.’ The computer keyboard may be used if preferred. There are 5 questions in the activity.
The second activity (drag and drop) asks the learner to match 5 words and pictures.
The third activity (drag and drop) asks the learner to unjumble the letters of a given image. The order of the letters is randomized, and sometimes the letters will be presented in the correct order. There are 5 questions in the activity.
The fourth activity (point and click) is a Pelman type memory game. The 12 ‘cards’ (6 words & 6 pictures) are presented face -down, and the learner has to match the words and images by clicking on the correct cards. If the cards do not match then they are turned face-down again. The learner has 10 ‘wrong’ attempts, after which the game finishes and displays the correct results.
The fifth activity (point and click) asks the learner to spell the word for the given image – either by using the onscreen ‘keyboard' (with the letters presented in alphabetical order rather than QWERTY) or by using the computer keyboard if preferred.

How to use this module
To use a Qedoc learning module, the following procedure is recommended:
- Really easy: click the click here to launch hyperlink at the top right of the page. Then just wait and click your way (if necessary) through any dialogue screens. The module will launch straight off the web.
- Fairly easy: if you wish to have the module downloaded to your desktop, then start the Qedoc Quiz Player (which you can download and install on your computer if you haven't done so yet) and run through the starting dialogues until it presents you with a list of modules to load. Switch to the online learning modules tab, and the Qedoc Quiz Player will download a list of currently published modules from the web. Choose your desired module (this one) from the list. A local copy will then be kept on your computer for future use.
- Not so easy: click the download link at the bottom of the "quick facts" box and the module's ZIP file will download to your desktop. To actually use this, however, you must move it to the /player/modplay subdirectory of whichever directory the Qedoc software is installed in (usually /programme files/qedoc).

The second major version of this (Dec 11, 2008) is an extraordinary demonstration of what you can achieve with Qedoc. John has used data tables to provide more powerfully randomized questions. He has over 50 activities and over 200 public domain images to support his primary school literacy teaching. Any primary school teacher should not only try this out in class, but also examine how it is made to get ideas for using Qedoc.
