Synchronisation of local and server versions of learning modules is an important step which quiz authors should take after publishing their modules. The purpose of synchronisation is to ensure that your local version is the same as the online version.

Reasons for synchronisation

Often when modules are published, Qedoc make small changes, such as:

  • clarifications of title and description.
  • addition or correction of keywords, which is critical to getting the module properly categorised.
  • correction of occasional spelling mistakes.
  • correction of incorrectly formatted questions (sometimes first-time publishers have difficulty with some of the settings).
  • removal of unused media.

Obviously it's a shame if the changes Qedoc make are lost when you submit your next upgrade. By synchronizing your local version with the server version, the Qedoc Quiz Maker can download the server version and correctly insert it into your module library. The process is fully automatic - you just need to click the "synchronisation" button and follow a few simple on-screen instructions.

Synchronisation can also be used simply to gain information about the local and server versions and compare them. You don't actually have to trigger the download or upload operations unless you actually decide to do this.

How to synchronize

There is a synchronisation button on the main Qedoc Quiz Maker toolbar. In the screenshot to the right, it is the 2nd icon from the right of the upper toolbar, next to the satellite dish.

Simply click this icon. It will launch a dialogue and attempt to contact the Qedoc website to collect information about the server version of the file. It will then display a detailed comparison, including build number, byte size and last date of modification. It should be possible to use these three indicators to work out which version is the more recent.

You will then be offered various options, such as uploading, downloading or simply viewing the module's online page. If you choose any of these options, the process is then fully automated - you can just watch.

Troubleshooting

Synchronisation uses the module ID for tracking modules. If you have made a local copy of a module using a different module ID, then you will be unable to synchronize. You can only synchronize two modules with the same module ID. In the above screenshot, you can see the module ID at the top of the dialogue, where it says "version comparison for module [[MODULE ID]]".
